Burundi is a small, landlocked country in East Africa with a population of about 13 million people. The people of Burundi are called Burundians. The country is home to three main ethnic groups: the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. Kirundi is the national language, alongside French and, more recently, English. Burundian culture emphasizes community, respect for elders, and hospitality. Traditional music and drumming—especially the famous Royal Drummers of Burundi—are central to cultural life. Most Burundians are Christians, with Catholicism being the largest denomination, often practiced alongside indigenous beliefs. Despite its challenges, Burundi has a rich heritage of art, storytelling, and dance.
